Erik Friedlander Erik Friedlander (Roland Rossbacher)

"Low Country Cupola," by Erik Friedlander

Erik Friedlander does magical things with the cello. For his latest trick, he casts away the instrument's traditional bow in favor of some Southern-rock-inflected fingerpicking. This free download is from Erik's latest album, Bonebridge.

We can find the age of a tree without cutting it down. Scientists do something called "coring" a tree, which is taking a thin section out of the tree, and then looking at it to learn about the tree and the environment. You can count the rings in the core to determine the tree's age:

Your recent ;program on the scientist who unintentionally destroyed the world's oldest living organism, left me perplexed. It was stated that the previous longevity record was that of another tree several hundred years younger. Who was responsble for the felling that tree and and why was there no similar brouhaha? Since a tree's age is determined by the number of its ruings, and, in order to count these, the tree must be cut down, otherwise our best guess will remain just that. The question is whether we ought to be so contented and continue to allow these ancient life forms to go on living..
