Blood-Soaked MP3's from Lucius

Wednesday, July 31, 2013 - 05:30 PM

In honor of our Blood episode, we asked one of our favorite bands, Lucius, to cover a couple of blood-soaked tunes for us. They spent an afternoon in their basement studio, and the result is these two bloody beautiful numbers.

Both are versions of old hymns. One is more raucous, the other more traditional. Both are available for you to download!

Lucius - Power in the Blood

Lucius - Blood of the Lamb

Lucius' debut album Wildewoman is coming October 15th, and they are touring right this minute

Thank you, Radiolab, for turning me on to this amazing band!

The first song that occurred to me was 'The Ballad of Mack The Knife':
"Oh, the shark has pretty teeth, dear,
And he keeps them pearly white"
Just a jackknife has MacHeath, dear
And he keeps it out of sight..."

For a pop tune, it's rather bloody.

To Rodney:

There is music and there is music with a message. In terms of music it was beatiful.

To Rodney Welsh,

This version of the song is the most intriguing version of this song that I have heard. Most people don't listen to gospel music at all, and none of them will get the message that it provides if they don't listen. If there are more versions of of a song, then there will be a wider variety of people who will get the message.

Also, you called this a commercialized version. This band is hardly a band with money-making as their top goal. If you want to hear commercialized Christian music, turn on your local Christian rock station.

If your goal is to cheapen and trivialize gospel music, then all I can say is "Mission accomplished."

Gospel is a musical form distinguished by sincerity. It is not improved by irony, cynicism, commercialism, cheap sound effects or crummy vocals.

What utter unlistenable garbage.

These are rad! Way to update these classics. Pumped to hear some gospel on radiolab.

You guys missed a cool opportunity, My Chemical Romance (all connotations aside) has a pretty fun song about blood.

I gave you blood, blood, gallons of the stuff
I gave you all that you can drink and it has never been enough.
I gave you blood, blood, bluh-uhd...

I'm the kind of human wreckage that you love!

Hard to touch the originality and personal fingerprint they bring to a tune.
