  • Came here to post the Millikan results, but Adam C. Synder beat me to it. You guys should really do a followup. There are many possible mechanisms for the slow reversion to the mean. One possibility is that the researchers who try to replicate the results, and fail, simply don't publish their results, fearing that they have made some blunder. Only people who are within a reasonable distance of the first result feel confident about publishing -- or they may adjust their experimental method until they get a similar result! If this is true, it may be that the defining factor is the prestige of the initial results. I suggest that investigators should look into whether such results cause slower declines.
